TRANSPORT STRIKES: what do the 2023 data reveal?

In 2023, in Italy, were declared 1.646 strikes and they were actually carried out 1.129.

Some sectors have recorded a particularly high number of strikes announced, including:

  • Local Public Transport: 341 strikes proclaimed, with 73 days of strike
  • Air Transport: 203 strikes proclaimed (33 days)
  • Environmental Hygiene: 183 strikes proclaimed (60 days)
  • Regions and Local Authorities: 137 strikes proclaimed (82 days)
  • Cleaning and Service: 81 strikes proclaimed (39 days)

At the regional level in 2023 have been proclaimed 1.422 strikeswith a geographical distribution is uneven. Some regions experienced a more significant impact than others.

*The total number of proclamations to strike at the regional level in 2019 (1.996) is lower than that reported in the general table (2.345), because the latter also includes the proclamations of the strikes of national significance (349). In the same way, in 2023, the total number of proclamations regional (1.422) is lower than general (1.646), as the latter also includes proclamations, national (224).

In 2023, the regions that have seen the the greatest number of strikes proclaimed were the Campania, with 208 strikes, followed by the Lombardiawhere they have been issued 178. Also theEmilia-Romagna he has recorded a significant number of protests, with 131 strikes, while in the Lazio it was a total of 126. Closes the list of Sicily, with 123 strikes proclaimed in the course of the year.

On the contrary, some regions have recorded a limited number of strikes proclaimed in 2023. The Molise it is the region with the lowest, with just 6 strikes, followed by the Valle d'aostawhere they have been issued 11. In Abruzzothe total stands at 13 strikes, while in the Brands were 14. Closes the list Sardinia, with 16 strikes proclaimed in the course of the year.

By comparing the data with the 2019, there was a the overall reduction in the number of strikes proclaimed 28.8%passing by 1.996 in 2019 1.422 in 2023.The transport sector has undergone a decline of –9,9% in the number of strikes proclaimed between 2019 and 2023, but has seen increased its incidence on the total number of strikes effective.

  • The strikes, which were proclaimed in transport in 2023: 639 (against 709 in 2019, -9,9%)

  • The weight of the transport sector on the total strikes: increased by 30,2% to 38,8% (+8,6%)

By analyzing the portfolios specific:

1. Air Transport

  • Proclamations: 203 in 2023 (-13,6%)
  • Actual: 141 in 2023 (+52,6%)
  • Days interested in: 33 days in 2023 (+57,1%)

Despite the reduction of the proclamations, the strikes, the actual increased significantly, with a greater impact on the service.

2. Rail Transport

  • Proclamations: 95 in 2023 (-5,0%)
  • Actual: 57 in 2023 (+61,0%)
  • Days interested in: 34 days in 2023 (-17,1%)

More strikes are effective, but of shorter duration compared to the past.

3. Local Public transport (LPT)

  • Proclamations: 341 in 2023 (-8,8%)
  • Actual: 245 in 2023 (+36,4%)
  • Days interested in: 73 days in 2023 (-23,2%)

Despite the number of strikes, which were proclaimed in the transport sector decreased by 9.9% between 2019 and 2023, the relative weight of the total of the strikes in Italy has increased by 30,2%, 38.8% (+8,6%).

Also in terms of strikes effective, the transport sector has increased its incidence, passing from the 30,2% to 39,2% of the national total (+9%).

This means that, although there are fewer strikes proclaimed than in the past, the transport sector has played a central role in labour unrest in Italy.

In 2023, therefore, the percentage of strikes effective than those proclaimed increased from of 62.3% and for 68.6% at the national level, demonstrating a greater determination in the implementation of the protests. While in the transport sector, this percentage rose from Of 62.3% and to 69.3%, confirming that, even with a decline of proclamations, the strikes actually implemented were proportionally more numerous than in the past, with a significant impact on the mobility.
