How to transform the role of the local public transport companies from individual user of the innovation to the role of \u201cInnovation Hub\u201d that can create innovation and act as an aggregator of ideas, start-ups and venture capital<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The public transport industry local produce in Italy with a turnover of approximately \u20ac 12 billion a year. The value produced by the sector of the local public transport is distributed on an chain <\/em>that involves different actors: from the producers of systems and vehicles to the operators of public transport, up to the final users (passengers) and, finally, to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The value chain <\/em>(or value network)<\/em><\/strong> local public transport is based on technologies and innovations that are becoming more and more advanced, in which the actors of the chain interact with each other to create value within the context of the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most interesting aspect of the last few years is that end users (passengers) are always more active in this process by stimulating, with their needs, the demand for new products and services, such as, for example, in the theme of payments, real-time information or alternative mobility.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operators of the TPL participate in the \u201cnetwork\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>by identifying the needs of the sector, also thanks to the knowledge of the needs of the passengers. These needs are collected by supplier<\/em>s external companies and start-ups) that develops advanced technologies and customized for the mobility industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The economic value generated by the investment of local public transport<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the field of local public transport, the realization of the investment in innovation on the part of the public transport companies to improve the system of a tender implies the positive externalities that impact on the whole of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the estimates of a study signed Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), the investments made in the five-year period 2019-2023, in public transport, amounting to 2.8 billion euros per year, would generate a value-added additional of approximately 4.3 billion euros per year, for a total of units of additional work equal to about 110 thousand per year. In other words, the induced product from transport companies can make a positive impact in terms of employment and economic impact on the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strong push to innovate in the field of mobility<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mobility sector is undergoing a period of strong innovative approach, to meet the growing demand for digitalization, automation and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the global level develop guidance systems autonomous<\/strong>, systems, advanced driver assistance (ADAS)<\/strong>detection of the objects in the roadway (LIDAR<\/strong>) and video surveillance systems <\/strong>avant-garde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent trends, such as the mobility as a service (MaaS)<\/strong>respond to the need of digitization and integration of the modes of transport from the users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EXAMPLES OF INNOVATION IN THE WORLD OF MOBILITY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The co-creation of value in the transport sector through innovation is not new. In fact, there are many examples of national and international Innovation Hub<\/em><\/strong> promoted in the first person by the companies themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Italy, the most notable example comes from ADR<\/strong>, Airports of Rome<\/strong>. The company that operates the airport of Rome, has created an Innovation Hub within the grounds of the airport of Fiumicino, an area of support and meeting Start-up that, when selected and chosen by the ADR, design, and produce innovative solutions to develop and test inside the airport. It is the first industrial accelerator in the heart of an airport stopover, with unique characteristics in Europe and an international cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mission of ADR Ventures (portfolio project of ADR in the activities of venture capital)<\/em> is to create value by identifying the \u201cstartupper\u201d of the future that can contribute to the development of solutions that can redefine the paradigms of the industry as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same way, the public transport operator of Munich MVG<\/strong> with the project MOBI<\/strong> (Laboratory of Mobility) has joined the initiative of the municipal Munich Urban Colab,<\/em> a joint project of the city of Munich and the local university. For the first time, start-ups, established companies, Venture Capital and Municipal Administration working under the same roof solutions for the city of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\nAnother way to create innovation and value directly inside of public transport companies comes from NOBINA<\/strong>, the operator of the TPL of Northern Europe (Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark), which has directly developed and internalized Nobina Technology<\/strong>, society for innovation and development of the Nobina Group.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The business models of the promotion of the innovation we show a varied landscape which can be summed up, with all the possible permutations, into two macro-categories as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Corporate Venture Capital (CVC)<\/strong> a form of investment of venture capital through which a company is mature and well established invests in a firm target (startup or small companies which are highly innovative, with high potential for scalability), obtaining a minority share of the share capital (equity) of the company. Through the investment<\/strong> CVC, the companies aim to pursue the strategic objectives of the supervision and development of new technologies and\/or new business models, accessing new skills, ideas and technologies outside of the enterprise perimeter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The creation of an Innovation Hub on the initiative of the company<\/strong>. In this case, the company promote and fund the development of new projects <\/strong>that come from the inside and the sharing of ideas among all of the business units.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, the Innovation Hub, in any form, contribute to accelerate the innovation and growth of a sector of the economy. Taking the concept of a network of value, in the actual, the Innovation Hub can induce the co-creation of value within an industry as that of the local public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How are the innovative projects in the companies TPL<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real challenge is to ask yourself how to implement inside of the companies of the TPL Italian this concept, and causes them to be more proactive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Considering the current dynamics of the industry and the organization type of the local public transport companies, an effective solution can be the instrument of \u201cCALL FOR IDEAS\u201d<\/strong>. One particularly effective tool that allows the company to set up and run tenders in the competition to find innovative ideas about certain internal needs of the business and the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the CALL FOR IDEAS, the company of the TPL select the nominations for the most innovative start-ups or companies and accompanying them in the process of development through the provision of capital for public-private partnerships. The aim of this business model is to develop inside of the operators TPL real Innovation Hub able to create the ecosystem needed to promote, on the basis of stable, initiatives and technological innovation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interaction between the subjects of this ecosystem would allow, in the last instance, to create value by accelerating the process of internal renewal of the local public transport companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
